About Your Guide

Welcome to Good Excuse Guide Service and Lodge.

My name is Jim Lane and I am the owner of Good Excuse Guide Service. I was asked to give a little information about myself and my qualifications to be a guide.

I am the third generation of guides in my family. My great-grandfather was a guide and worked the camps in the Forks area way back when the damns were first being built. My dad had joined in helping him and eventually become as guide as well. I started hunting when I was 10 years old and shot my first hunting out of Idea’s camp at the damn at Lake Moxie, hunting every weekend even after I had tagged out. My dad made me lead us out of the woods each and every time. Dad is a very stern man that told it like it was and yes, even if not more to his son. The first lesson pounded into my head was never point a gun at anything you don’t wish to kill. I spent my first night in the woods that year as he told me we were lost and had to stay. Of course we weren’t and Mom knew, but it was his way of explaining all those spooks that were in the woods at night. All though he worked out of town a lot, he gave me the knowledge that I have and use to this day. From tracking, to turning game, habits and more, for that thank him and it became my drive to follow in those big footprints.

I am and still work for a fire department full-time with a lot of time off (being the old guy). I am a medic of 35 years so I am capable of handling most issues. I just need to know before you arrive. I have taught guides  how to do first aid correctly, as well as snowmobile and ATV emergency first aid in the woods.

I stay small for a reason:  I like to share time with my sports and hope never to get so big that it’s not fun anymore. So whatever your choice, enjoy our state and your adventure.
